Scooter Bike Board

I made this "Scooter Bike Board" at 3rd Ward design studio during a class called "Bicycle Sculpture". The body is made from a 10 speed bike fork MIG welded to a mountain bike fork, custom steel piping and a 20" mountain bike wheel. The custom skateboard deck is made of plywood with a standard skateboard grip surface. The trucks and skate board wheels were purchased from Burton Boards.

I ride this board to and from the subway and around town. I feel more confident with a large wheel in front as opposed to a small standard scooter wheel which has caused me to wipe out due to road divots. The rear trucks make it fun to ride.

This is the first model and many improvements will be made the next go-around.

Thank you to Thomas Porter and Olivia Katz my instructors at 3rd Ward for their awesome teaching and serious design and fabrication skills.

The RoughRidertm Wheelchair

During the summer of 2007 I built The RoughRidertm wheelchair with a non-profit organization in Colombia, South America. The Rough Rider was designed by Whirlwind Wheelchair based out of San Francisco, California. The wheelchair is highly functional and provides its users a stable way to traverse over uneven terrain. The wheelchair is designed to be affordable for people in developing countries.

While in Cali, Colombia I completed 120 hours of wheelchair fabrication and design education. The training consisted of MIG welding, brazing, wheelchair fitting and many other fabrication techniques.

Skateboard

I made this skateboard out of 7 sheets of 1/16" maple veneer. The skateboard is 36" long and 10 1/2" wide at its widest point. Here were the basic steps involved in its creation:
  1. Created a styrofoam deck mold. Filed the edges to create the concavity and skateboard tail.
  2. Glued seven layers of alternating grain maple veneer using wood glue (could have used epoxy) and taped the veneer to the styrofoam mold
  3. Placed the mold and deck in a vacuum bag where it dried for 6 hours into its molded shape
  4. Trimmed, sanded and routed the board edges
  5. Drilled the holes for the truck screws
  6. Sanded and stained
  7. Painted black and white lines using painters tape as a stencil
  8. Applied a total of seven layers of polyurethane
  9. Applied Tread Tex to the top of the board while the polyurethane was still wet. Once dry, another layer of polyurethane was applied. The Tread Tex was used in place of standard grip tape.
  10. Attached the trucks, risers and wheels

Portable Practice Drum Set

I built this practice drum set for my brother when he was in college. He could not fit his regular drumset into his college dorm room, so I created a practice set that he could stow away underneath his bed when not in use. It's made out of plywood, audio system carpeting, rubber drum pads and a base drum pedal.

This invention could be made out of some kind of lightweight metal and have truly foldable parts. The drum pads could be locked into a playing position and then lay flat when being stored. I'm sure it could be made so that the whole thing is about 4-5 inches thick. Vibration sensors could be mounted underneath the pads and run through a midi system to give the user a more realistic practice experience.

Go-Cart

This go-cart was made from angle iron, wood, a bathroom step stool, a snow blower engine, a boat seat and other random items that helped me to get this cart to work. It was a blast to make and ran at around 30 mph.

Wooden Chair Overhall

This chair was bought in pretty poor condition. The mahogany wood was sanded and polyurethaned. The sides of the chair were rebuilt using new wood. I reupholstered the chair by creating new cushions and used jute webbing under the bottom cushion as the support.

End Table

This end table was made out of maple wood using mortise and tenons for its joints.

Metal Table Legs

I created the metal table legs by MIG welding 3/8" square rods. The legs are meant to feel elegant and raw. The table top is made from ingas wood purchased and finished by a company called From the Source in Brooklyn, NY.

Boogie Board Bike Rack

This boogie board bike rack was made from PVC pipinp and is made to hold two boards. There's a beach called "Fort Tilden" on the southern end of Brooklyn that I ride to.

Portable Podium

This portable podium was made so that it could easily be carried and brought to lectures. The stand was purchased, and I built the top and sewed together the carry bag.
